Shopify Theme Development for Stores That Have Outgrown Their Theme

Your store should reflect your brand, support the way you sell and remain easy for your team to manage. Nala Networks customizes existing Shopify themes, redesigns storefronts and builds reusable sections, blocks and templates around real business requirements.

We use modern Shopify development tools including AI-assisted coding where it helps to deliver efficiently. Every change is still reviewed, tested and deployed by experienced Shopify developers.

AI Can Generate Code. Your Store Still Needs Engineering.

Shopify theme development has changed. Shopify Magic can generate theme blocks from a prompt, while tools such as Claude Code and Shopify's AI Toolkit can help developers work with current documentation, validate code and complete routine tasks faster.

That is useful — but generated code is only a starting point.

A production storefront still needs sound architecture, responsive behavior, dynamic product data, app compatibility, analytics, accessibility, performance testing and a safe release process. A block that looks correct on one page can still fail on mobile or become difficult to maintain.

Nala combines AI-assisted speed with accountable Shopify engineering.

You are not paying us to type Liquid faster. You are hiring us to make the right change, integrate it properly and deliver a storefront your customers and staff can rely on.

What we design and build:

  • Custom sections and theme blocks — reusable, merchant-editable content components
  • Product and collection experiences — media, variant selectors, size guides, filtering
  • Cart and conversion improvements — drawers, shipping messages, trust content
  • Metafields and metaobjects — specifications, FAQs, size charts, buying guides
  • App and extension integration — app blocks styled to feel like part of the store
  • B2B, wholesale and Markets — localization, catalog presentation, market-specific experiences
  • Performance and technical cleanup — theme code, JavaScript, CSS, media loading
  • Accessibility and responsive behavior — keyboard, focus, contrast, semantics
  • Theme modernization — translate approved Figma or brand designs into Shopify components

Choose the Right Level of Theme Work

Every Shopify store has different needs. We recommend the build path that makes the most sense for your current situation — whether that means a targeted improvement or starting fresh on a modern foundation.

Improve Your Existing Theme

Keep the theme and content you already have while fixing areas that limit your store. Best for custom sections, product-page improvements, visual updates, mobile fixes, app styling and targeted conversion improvements.

Redesign on a Modern Foundation

Transform a Shopify Theme Store theme — including Horizon — into a branded storefront with reusable layouts and better merchant controls. Best for meaningful redesigns without a full custom build.

Build a Custom Shopify Theme

Develop a storefront around approved designs and specific merchandising requirements. Best for established brands with distinctive design systems, complex catalogs or journeys standard themes cannot support.

Ongoing Theme Development

Campaign pages, feature improvements, testing, bug fixes and platform changes on an ongoing basis — without the cost of a full internal development team.

Our Modern Shopify Theme Workflow

Each project follows a structured sequence. Architecture review and scoping precede development. Testing happens outside the live theme. Every phase has a defined entry and completion point.

Development Sequence — Six Phases

  1. 01

    Review the Store and Requirement

We examine the current theme, installed apps, relevant data and the result you want to achieve.

  2. 02

    Recommend the Best Build Path

We explain whether to customize, redesign, build custom or use an app or integration. You receive a defined scope and estimate before development begins.

  3. 03

Design the Customer and Merchant Experience

We plan how the feature works for shoppers and how your staff will manage it in Shopify after launch.

  4. 04

    Build with Shopify-Aware Tools

We use Shopify CLI, current documentation, validation tools and, where appropriate, Claude Code with Shopify's AI Toolkit. AI accelerates research and implementation; our developers remain responsible for the architecture and final code.

  5. 05

    Test Outside the Live Theme

Changes are developed in a duplicate, development or unpublished theme. We test relevant browsers, screen sizes, product states, app blocks, analytics and merchant settings.

  6. 06

    Launch and Support

We coordinate publishing, complete post-launch checks and provide the agreed guidance or training. Ongoing support is available.

Git-Backed Theme Backup and Version Control

Your theme code should never live in only one place. Before development begins, we create a version-controlled baseline. If you already use GitHub, we work in your existing private repository — your business retains ownership. If you don't, Nala creates and maintains a private project repository with access shared to the people you approve. Where appropriate, we connect the agreed branch using Shopify's GitHub integration so editor changes are also recorded. Note: this workflow protects theme code and settings — it does not back up products, orders, customers or third-party app data.

How the Workflow Protects Your Theme

  1. 01

    Baseline Backup

We capture the current theme before development begins — giving a clear record of the original code that can be compared against every change made during the project.

  2. 02

    Feature Branches

New features and fixes are developed in separate branches, isolated from the approved production version of the theme at all times.

  3. 03

    Review and Testing

Changes are reviewed and tested in a duplicate, development or unpublished Shopify theme before they touch the live storefront.

  4. 04

    Release History

Approved work is merged and tagged as the version prepared for launch, creating a traceable record of every production release.

  5. 05

    Client Access

Your team receives access to the agreed repository and its full change history. Repository ownership and access permissions are confirmed at project start.

  6. 06

    Ongoing Maintenance

Future developers can understand what changed, when it changed and why — without relying on memory or tribal knowledge.

How Package Pricing Works

The listed prices are starting points for clearly defined work on an existing Shopify theme.

Before development begins, we review your theme, requested outcome, installed applications and technical dependencies. We then confirm the package, final scope, price and delivery schedule.

A larger or more complex request might require a custom estimate.

Third-party application subscriptions, premium theme licences, stock media, copywriting, brand design, custom application development and external service fees are not included unless specifically stated in your proposal.

What We Need to Get Started

  • Your Shopify store address
  • Collaborator or approved theme access
  • The name of the theme to be modified
  • A written explanation of the requested change
  • Screenshots, examples or an approved Figma design where available
  • The pages, products or templates affected
  • Details of applications related to the feature
  • Access to your existing GitHub repository, if applicable

You should never send us your Shopify account password. We use Shopify-approved collaborator or theme-access methods.

My current Shopify theme looks generic. Can you make it look unique without rebuilding from scratch?

Absolutely. We specialize in advanced theme tailoring — we enhance your existing theme's structure, design, and features while keeping your current setup intact. You'll get a completely fresh, branded experience without losing existing content or SEO value.

How do I know if my current theme is slowing down my store?

Our experts perform a comprehensive speed audit, checking for bloated scripts, unoptimized images, and redundant code. You'll receive a report with actionable fixes — and we can implement them to make your site load lightning fast, boosting both SEO and conversions.

Can you add features my current theme doesn't support — like product customizers or advanced filters?

Yes — we build custom sections and app integrations on Shopify 2.0 themes. Whether it's a product configurator, personalized recommendations, or subscription logic, we can code these features directly into your theme to make them seamless and scalable.

What's the difference between theme customization and theme development?

Theme customization means improving and extending an existing theme; development means building one from scratch. We handle both. If your theme's architecture limits growth, we'll develop a custom theme — or rebuild it using Shopify's 2.0 framework for modular control.

Can you match our existing website design or branding?

Definitely. Our design team can recreate your brand's visual identity — color palette, typography, layout, and imagery — right inside Shopify. We ensure your online store feels consistent and premium, matching your brand across all channels.

How long does a typical theme customization project take?

It depends on the scope — small enhancements (like adding sections or fixing layout issues) may take 1–2 weeks, while full redesigns or custom builds average 4–6 weeks. We'll share a clear timeline and milestones during your free consultation.

Will theme customization affect my SEO or store performance?

No — our developers follow Shopify's best coding standards to ensure clean, fast, and SEO-friendly builds. We also back up your live store before applying changes, so there's zero downtime or data loss.

Do you offer ongoing support after theme customization?

Yes. We provide post-launch support and maintenance plans — covering updates, bug fixes, and Shopify upgrades (like Checkout Extensibility or Online Store 2.0). You'll always have experts available to keep your store optimized and secure.

Can you customize themes for Shopify Plus or B2B stores?

Absolutely. We're experienced with Shopify Plus customizations, including checkout extensions, scripts to functions migration, and B2B features like tiered pricing, wholesale catalogs, and ERP integrations.

I'm not sure where to start — can you audit my theme first?

Of course. We offer a free theme consultation where we review your design, speed, UX, and conversion structure — then provide a clear action plan showing what's working, what's not, and how we can elevate your store to the next level.
